Celebrating Filipino American History Month in San Antonio: A Reflection of Heritage, Unity, and Resilience

As the Region Chairman of the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce-Greater San Antonio (PACC-GSA), I am deeply honored to celebrate the City of San Antonio's official proclamation recognizing October 2024 as Filipino American History Month. This proclamation, signed by Mayor Ron Nirenberg, is a powerful acknowledgment of the rich history, contributions, and resilience of Filipino Americans, not only in San Antonio but across the United States.

A Heritage Rooted in History

Filipino Americans have a longstanding and integral place in U.S. history. As highlighted in the proclamation, the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the U.S. dates back to the 16th century at Morro Bay, California, long before the nation’s founding in 1776. This historical fact alone is a testament to the deep-rooted contributions of Filipino immigrants to the fabric of American society.

Today, Filipinos make up the largest Asian American group in 11 U.S. states and are among the fastest-growing immigrant communities. Here in San Antonio, our local Filipino community continues to play a vital role in enriching the cultural and economic landscape, reflecting a shared history that we proudly commemorate.

Honoring the Sacrifices of Filipino and Filipino American Heroes

The month of October is also a solemn time of remembrance for the brave Filipinos and Filipino Americans who answered the call of duty during World War II. Over 260,000 Filipino and Filipino American soldiers served, with many making the ultimate sacrifice in battles such as the Bataan Death March—an event that remains etched in the collective memory of the Filipino community. Their legacy continues today with over 25,000 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders currently serving in the U.S. armed forces, carrying forward the courage and patriotism of their predecessors.

As we celebrate this month, let us take a moment to honor their contributions and sacrifices, remembering that the freedoms we enjoy today are due in part to the bravery of these individuals.

The Power of “Struggle, Resistance, Solidarity, and Resilience”

The theme for Filipino American History Month 2024, "Struggle, Resistance, Solidarity, and Resilience," captures the essence of the Filipino American experience. For over 125 years, Filipino Americans have persevered through adversity, resisted oppression, and united in solidarity to create meaningful change. Whether through civil rights activism, such as the groundbreaking work of Larry Itliong, or in everyday acts of community-building, Filipino Americans have consistently demonstrated resilience.

Itliong’s legacy, alongside figures like Cesar Chavez, paved the way for the labor rights movement in America, particularly through the establishment of the United Farm Workers Union. His story serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, solidarity can lead to enduring victories for justice and equality.

A Celebration of Unity and Community

This month offers an opportunity for us to reflect on the importance of unity within the Filipino and broader San Antonio communities. It is a time to come together to celebrate our shared values, cultural heritage, and achievements. From business leaders to community organizers, Filipino Americans have made significant contributions to the social and economic development of San Antonio, and our celebration is a testament to this ongoing impact.

At PACC-GSA, we are committed to fostering this unity through initiatives that promote entrepreneurship, business growth, and cultural exchange between the Philippines and the United States. Our programs, including educational workshops, business networking events, and community outreach, are designed to empower Filipino Americans and their friends in San Antonio to succeed and contribute to the region’s prosperity.

Looking Ahead with Pride

As we observe Filipino American History Month, let us carry forward the legacy of those who came before us—the trailblazers, the veterans, the activists, and the everyday Filipinos who shaped our community and the nation. Let us also continue to promote and nurture the bonds of friendship between San Antonio and our Sister City, Baguio, Philippines, reinforcing the importance of international cooperation and shared cultural values.

On behalf of the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce-Greater San Antonio, I extend my deepest gratitude to Mayor Ron Nirenberg and the City of San Antonio for this meaningful recognition. Let us use this month to reflect, celebrate, and continue building a future rooted in our shared history, resilience, and unity.

Mabuhay ang Filipino American community!
