Dr. Carey H. Latimore

 Carey H. Latimore is Associate Professor of History at Trinity University where he is the co- director of the African American Studies program and the past Chair of the History Department. He holds a M.A. and PhD in United States History from Emory University and a B.A. from the University of Richmond. A specialist on African American and Southern History, Dr. Latimore is particularly interested in the construction of African American communities in the Reconstruction and post Reconstruction South.

Dr. Latimore has received numerous awards and recognitions including: the Upton Presidential Scholarship, the Community College Scholars award, the Minority Scholars in Research award, the Parker Award, and the Grey scholarship. He has also received the Dean's Teaching Fellowship, the Brown Southern Studies Award, and the Emory Minority Graduate Fellowship. Dr. Latimore is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, the Golden Key National Honor Society, and the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society.

He is the author of The Role of Southern Free Blacks During the Civil War Era: The Life of Free African American in Richmond, Virginia 1850-1876, which was published in 2015. Dr. Latimore also researched and prepared the adult book for Urban Ministries 2018 adult student book, City on a Hill. His current monograph, Unshakeable Faith: African American Stories of Redemption, Hope, and Community is under contract with Our Daily Bread Publishing and is scheduled to be published in January 2022.

His opinion pieces have been published by the Austin American Statesman and the San Antonio Express News among other newspaper outlets. He is also frequent commentator for various outlets on current issues such as land ownership, political identity, and religion.

An ordained Baptist minister he also serves his community in a number of ways that connect his scholarly interests with his community concerns. He is currently an Associate Minister at Mt. Zion First Baptist Church, where he has been a member since 2004.

Dr. Latimore currently resides in San Antonio and is married to the former Almida Pachoco, a former graduate of Leyte State College (now Leyte Normal University) and Southwestern University in Cebu, Philippines. In his spare time he enjoys traveling, reading, exercising, and video games.
